Summer Scoops Tutors

Job Summary:

Summer Scoops Tutors to assist children in the local community in improving their reading skills during two 1-week in person camps. Miami has developed partnerships with several local schools and organizations to provide one-on-one support and assistance for children in grades K-6 in the areas of reading, writing, spelling, and vocabulary. Summer Scoops will run at Ridgeway Elementary in Hamilton, Ohio and at the Lane Library in Oxford, Ohio. No previous tutoring experience is necessary. All College of Education, Health, and Society students can apply. Candidates must commit to work each day of the program during the 2 weeks of service. Candidates will be required to submit a State of Ohio criminal background check or obtain one through the Miami University Police Department or an acceptable location before being hired. The cost of the background check will be covered by the Learning Lab.

Duties/Physical Demands:

The Summer Learning Lab Tutors will develop meaningful and positive relationships with tutees, partner schools/organizations and other tutors while demonstrating a solid commitment to improvement of tutees skills; maintain regular communication with teachers or other supervisors at their school or community site, other tutors, and the program coordinator; adhere to all CEHS, Miami University, and tutoring site guidelines and regulations at all times, especially dress code and safety protocols; show up on time each week for their scheduled sessions; complete training on Canvas before the beginning of the camp; complete the Minors on Campus training; attend a required one-day orientation.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Education, or a High School Diploma with 5 or more years’ experience working with K-12 students tutoring, teaching, or as a class aide.

Desired Qualifications:

Consideration may be given to candidates with a bachelor’s degree in Education; knowledge of and ability to explain elementary reading and math skills; experience engaging and developing good rapport with children ages 5-12; formal/informal tutoring experience; and basic knowledge of how to use Google Meet and Zoom.
