Job Summary:

For six weeks during the summer (from June 3rd - July 25th, 2024), the Upward Bound Tutor-Mentor will work with participants in Miami University Hamilton’s Upward Bound program. Program participants are high school students attending Hamilton High School. The program includes academic, cultural, and recreational activities and will take place at Miami University Hamilton campus. The TM will support and promote academic excellence, mentor students on their path to college matriculation, and foster a sense of community and belonging among participants. Standard working hours will be Mon-Thurs 8:30-4:30 with occasional extended/ weekend hours. Multiple TM’s will be hired. The position is temporary.

Essential Duties:

The TM will:
1. Mentor small groups of <10 high school students including planning and facilitating educational, cultural, and recreational events
2. Maintain communication with Upward Bound staff regarding students’ progress in classes, needs, and concerns
3. Provide academic support and college mentoring to individuals and groups of students
4. Promote a community of mutual trust and respect through an appreciation for diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice
5. Facilitate student learning by helping them develop strong study skills in crucial academic areas, such as note-taking and creating weekly study schedules
6. Refer students to the proper campus resources when necessary
7. Connect with students and learn more about their life and personal circumstances that might interfere with their success
8. Guide students to developing critical thinking skills and independently solve problems
9. Maintain strong professional boundaries with students
10. Advise students on how to set goals to benefit their overall academic success
11. Maintain the office rules and professional ethics for mentoring
12. Use of basic office software (Google Docs, Microsoft Word, etc) and tasks such as making copies
Other duties as needed

Minimum Qualifications:

Rising college sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduates (by the beginning of the summer program) in good academic standing and a desire to work with academically at-risk students. All TM’s must be available from June 3 - July 26.

· Minimum 2.80 GPA
· At least 30 hours of earned college credit
· At least one full academic year as a full-time college student

Students recommended for hire must successfully pass a State of Ohio Criminal Background check before starting to work.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience leading small groups, tutoring, mentoring, or working with high school-aged youth representing diverse backgrounds, experiences, and interests.

· Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
· Prior experience with conflict resolution in a previous position (i.e. in a job, student organization, volunteer project)
· Reliable, with excellent attendance habits
· Detail-oriented
· Courteous, welcoming demeanor and dedication to assist students, parents, faculty, and staff
· Strong organizational skills
· Excellent customer service skills
