Job Summary:

Grainger Assistant Director for Academic Advising and Student Engagement to support, retain, and graduate diverse students in the Passport, Ryan Family Scholars, and Grainger Scholars programs including advising, programming, coaching, and mentoring students. This position reports to the Director of Passport, Ryan, Family Scholars, and Grainger Scholars.

Duties/Physical Demands:

The Grainger Assistant Director for Academic Advising and Student Engagement will:

• academically advise Farmer School of Business students in the Passport, Ryan Family Scholars, and Grainger Scholars program including but not limited to interpreting campus policies and procedures, co-creating degree completion plans and articulating progress, setting and defining goals, identifying course equivalencies at domestic and international institutions, exploring academic programs and careers, referring to appropriate campus resources, and supporting student development and engagement
• record advising notes in Navigate
• influence retention and degree progress by developing strong relationships with students
• coach students on making registration choices that promote timely and realistic degree progress balancing degree requirements and their interests
• identify barriers to student degree progress and support students to identify solutions
• liaise with Entrepreneurship to ensure that Ryan Family Scholars and Grainger Scholars pursue Entrepreneurship as a co-major or minor
• provide support to students to ensure they complete one or more internships
• teaches first year experience course for Passport, Ryan Family Scholars, and Grainger Scholars students; support drop-in advising as needed; liaises with other academic divisions to ensure non-business students in the Passport, Ryan Family Scholars, and Grainger Scholars program are well supported.

The Grainger Assistant Director for Academic Advising and Student Engagement will also work closely with the Director of Passport, Ryan Family Scholars, and Grainger Scholars to support, retain, and graduate Ryan Family and Grainger Scholars and Passport students by regularly monitoring academic progress through early alerts, midterm interventions, faculty alerts, and final grades.

• connecting students with academic support and other resources across campus
• develop programming to facilitate a sense of belonging, coordinate professional development workshops, monthly Passport cohort meetings, etc.
• remain up-to-date on best practices and research to support first generation and underrepresented students
• collect, analyze and summarize data to understand participant trends, inform program services to enhance retention and timely graduation; prepares end-of-year report to measure impact and success of the Passport cohorts, Ryan Family Scholars, and Grainger Scholars with the Director of Passport, Ryan Family Scholars, and Grainger Scholars.

This position will also conduct office hours in Neighborhood Living Learning Community each semester with Ryan Family Scholars, Grainger Scholars, and Passport students.

• support Residence Life staff to coordinate and facilitate programming for Ryan Family Scholars, Grainger Scholars, and Passport students in the Neighborhood Living Learning Community
• remain informed on professional, academic, and social issues impacting diverse students and develop tools to assess success of program activities via frequent and regular meetings with students both individually and in small groups
• facilitate a mentoring program with peer mentors for the Ryan Family Scholars, Grainger Scholars, and Passport program and establish mentoring relationships to help nurture and develop these students
• assist students in navigating, reviewing, understanding, financial aid concerns in partnership with One Stop
• work closely with the Assistant Director for Passport, Ryan Family Scholars and Grainger Scholars to develop and execute the Passport Bootcamp pre-semester program
• support admission events to attract Passport, Ryan Family Scholars, and Grainger Scholars as needed

Other duties as assigned by the Director for Passport, Ryan Family Scholars and Grainger Scholars and Assistant Dean & Director of Divisional Advising.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Counseling, College Student Personnel, Student Affairs and Higher Education, Social Work, or other closely related field and at least four years of professional experience in advising or a closely related field.

Desired Qualifications:

Consideration may be given to candidates with 4 years advising and professional experience in an undergraduate business program, experience working with first generation college students or outreach programs with diverse communities, and experience in admission, student success, teaching a first year experience course, career development; superior interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite software and internet applications; ability to work effectively and build relationships with a variety of stakeholders in different contexts, including faculty, staff, and students; candidates with outstanding interpersonal communication skills; strong organizational skills and highly self-motivated; willingness to work outside regular hours when programs include nights or weekends; ability to work quickly and accurately with attention to detail; admission or yield experience building pipeline programs; marketing experience; ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines; ability to solve problems creatively and efficiently.
