Utility Systems Maintenance Specialist

Salary/Grade:

$22.22 hr/G2-M1

Job Summary:

Assists in maintaining university facilities by performing preventative and routine maintenance on chillers, boilers, generators, equipment auxiliaries, and other complex mechanical and electro-mechanical equipment, as well as steam, hot water and chilled water distribution, cooling towers and mechanical systems related chemical treatment. Hours for this position are 5 days a week, 8 hours per day, typically 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Modifications in this schedule may be necessary to accommodate 24/7 operational needs.

Duties/Physical Demands:

Monitor campus steam systems, electrical systems, hot water and chilled water systems.
Perform predictive, preventative and routine maintenance on chillers, generators, engines, fuel trains and auxiliaries.
Monitor and resolve engine and generator alarms.
Monitor and resolve chiller plant alarms.
Install new and replacement equipment.
Troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment to determine necessary repairs and the required parts, materials, and supplies.
Provide supervision and guidance to Utilities Systems Maintenance Assistants as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires nine months of technical training beyond high school and three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of unit operations
Mechanical skills
Knowledge of computer and unit applications
Supervisory skills

Knowledge of chiller operations, HVAC experience, and Building Automation Control systems.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

Physical effort usually requires considerable walking and standing with some lifting of materials weighing 25 to 50 pounds. Somewhat disagreeable working conditions. Some exposure to several unpleasant elements which are particularly disagreeable.
