Job Summary:

America Counts is a federal tutoring program that allows Miami students, who qualify for Federal College Work Study, to assist children in the local community improve their math skills. Miami has developed partnerships with several local schools and organizations in an effort to provide one-on-one support and assistance for children in grades K-6 in math. Our partners are located throughout Butler and Hamilton Counties. No previous tutoring experience is necessary. All majors/career paths can apply.

Applicants must commit to at least one semester of service but preferably an academic year or more. If recommended for hire by the Learning Lab, you will be required to pass a State of Ohio criminal background check through the Miami University Police Department before being hired. The cost of the background check will be covered by the Learning Lab.

Essential Duties:

• Tutors will develop a meaningful and positive relationship with tutees, partner schools/organizations and other tutors while demonstrating a solid commitment to improvement of tutees skills.
• Tutors are expected maintain regular communication with teachers or other supervisors at their school or community site, other tutors, and the program coordinator.
• Tutors will adhere to all CEHS, Miami University, and tutoring site guidelines and regulations at all times, especially dress code and safety protocols.
• Tutors are expected to show up on time each week for their scheduled sessions.
• Tutors must commit to one semester of service but preferably an academic year or more.
• If recommended for hire by the Learning Lab, you will be required to pass a State of Ohio criminal background check through the Miami University Police Department before being hired. The cost of the background check will be covered by the Learning Lab.
• Tutors may be required to attend trainings throughout the year.
• Tutors will be required to travel to the American Reads/America Counts worksites.

Minimum Qualifications:

• All applicants must be eligible for federal work study.
• Tutors must be available either during the regular school day 8:00am – 3:00pm for at least 2 hour time blocks or during after school hours of 3:00pm to 6:00pm.
• Applicants should have a desire to make a difference in the lives of local children in surrounding communities.

Applicants recommended for hire must pass a State of Ohio Criminal Background Check.

Preferred Qualifications:

• All applicants must be eligible for federal work study.
• Tutors must be available either during the regular school day 8:00am – 3:00pm for at least 2 hour time blocks or during after school hours of 3:00pm to 6:00pm.
• Applicants should have a desire to make a difference in the lives of local children in surrounding communities.

Applicants recommended for hire must pass a State of Ohio Criminal Background Check.
