Student Lab Assistant 2 - Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering

Salary/Grade: $12.50 - $14.00 / hr
Hours per Week: 10-20
Duration of Appointment: One semester/term
Job Summary:

Work performed at this level is done independently of supervision.
Requires the highest level of artistic, technical or scientific expertise.
Provide supervision to student employees at the Student Master 1 undergrad level.

For Academic and Administrative Assistance settings, the student must:
Perform complex research activities in the scientific field; students engaged in such activity may be responsible for completion of project assigned with no supervision of administrative staff. They may also serve as a group leader in research activities.
For Technical settings, the student must:
Possess advanced computer knowledge and customer support knowledge in advanced client/server programming, relational databases, Novell, C++, TCP/IP, SQL, JAVA, Visual Basic.
Demonstrate evidence of advanced technical and software skills, leadership, skills in mentoring, training, expert management and business skills.
Maintain professional environment for fellow employees and clients.
Approve supervisory functions, provide expert leadership and approve schedules.
Ability to work unsupervised.

Essential Duties:

Responsibilities include:
-Supervise, guide and instruct students on the safe and appropriate use of machines/tools. All students are required to follow lab safety procedures in order to avoid serious or fatal injury.
-Operate manual metalworking machinery, power tools and/or computer numerical control machines.
-Organizing machine tools, hand tools and other equipment
-Assist with routine machine maintenance
-Disassembly and reassembly of components
-Frequent standing, walking and operating equipment. Some lifting of materials weighing up to 50 pounds
-Some machinery may present an element of risk of injury due to an accident. Possess preparedness skills to address potential accidents
-Supervising other student employees as required

Minimum Qualifications:

-Received a passing grade in MME 231
-Understands and follows all lab safety procedures
-Familiar with metalworking machinery (able to operate mills, lathes, bandsaws, waterjet, drill press, belt sander, etc.)
-Works responsibly without supervision

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience as a lab employee in MME
