Armstrong Student Center History

The Armstrong Student Center was a dream the Associated Student Government began advocating for in 2002 and came to fruition on Feb. 7, 2014. Find out more about special moments in our history below.

Planning

In April 2008, the Miami University Board of Trustees approved planning for the Bicentennial Student Center. After several years of planning, Robert Keller, University Architect, and David Creamer, Vice President of Finance and Business Services, announced a building plan in October 2009.

Funding and Groundbreaking

Alumni Mike '61 and Anne '61 Armstrong provided a $15 million leadership gift to name the Armstrong Student Center in July 2010. On Oct. 6, 2011, a ceremonial groundbreaking officially started the construction of the Armstrong Student Center.

10th Anniversary

During the Spring Semester of 2024, the Armstrong Student Center celebrated 10 years of adding to the Miami Experience. There was a birthday party, a decade's dance, and a partnered with Miami Activities and Programming for SpringFest. These events marked the start of the next decade for the center.

Land Acknowledgement

Miami University is located within the traditional homelands of the Miami and Shawnee people, who along with other Indigenous groups ceded these lands to the United States in the first treaty of Greenville in 1795.

The Miami people, whose name our university carries, were forcibly removed from these homelands in 1846.

In 1972, the relationship between Miami University and the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma began and evolved into a reciprocal partnership, including the creation of the Myaamia Center at Miami University in 2001.

The work of the Myaamia Center serves the Miami Tribe community and is dedicated to the revitalization of Miami language and culture and to restoring that knowledge to the Myaamia people.

Miami University and the Miami Tribe are proud of this work and of the Myaamia students who have attended Miami since 1991 through the Myaamia Heritage Award Program.

Role of the College Union

The Armstrong Student Center is the college union at Miami University. It helps advance a sense of community and bolsters the educational mission of the institution and the development of students as lifelong learners by delivering an array of educational, social, and recreational programs, services, and facilities.

The Armstrong Student Center serves as the heart of the campus community and creates a welcoming environment by:

  • Operating as a student-centered organization that engages in shared decision-making and holistic development through employment and involvement.
  • Educating students in leadership and social responsibility while offering firsthand experiences in global citizenship.
  • Providing gathering spaces that encourage formal and informal community interactions that build meaningful relationships.

As the college union, the Armstrong Student Center is a member of the Association for College Unions International (ACUI). ACUI is primarily focused on the work of those within the college unions and student activities field and strives to provide a welcoming community for all those who choose to belong. The work of ACUI helps guide the ASC staff in best practices and helps the center achieve its mission to be the living room of campus. Miami University has been a member of ACUI for over 50 years.
