Job Summary:

Myaamia Center: Communications Specialist to work closely with the Myaamia Center Executive Team to develop and implement a communications strategy to promote the work of the center and tell the story of the relationship between the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and Miami University. Appointment begins July 1, 2022.

Duties/Physical Demands:

The Communications Specialist will be responsible for:

Communications and Marketing Strategy —Tasks include:
• Evaluate current communications and marketing procedures of the Myaamia Center’s programs and develop a strategic communication plan for improving current strategy.
• Create communication standards, processes, and templates as well as schedules and deadlines for implementation of communication projects.
• Maintain relationships with key partner offices at Miami University to advance communications across campus.


Content Creation —Tasks include:
• Produce content showcasing the accomplishments and ongoing work of the Myaamia Center and its programs.
• Works in collaboration with Myaamia Center staff and external stakeholders to identify and publish stories for distribution through a variety of internal and external communications channels.
• Planning and implementation of all Myaamia Center social media
• Coordination and execution of Myaamia Center Newsletter
• Maintain Myaamia Center webpages, including content generation and photo updates


Advancing Miami Tribe Relations–Tasks include:
• Representing Miami University at Miami Tribe events/activities and planned work sessions, held most often in Oklahoma or Indiana
• Working with divisions across campus to include Myaamia Center content in their communications channels.


Additional Responsibilities—Tasks include:
• Participate in Tribe and University community cultural activities
• Participate in Myaamia Center meetings and activities upon request


Other duties as determined.


Travel – This position requires travel (some weekends) to participate in Myaamia community events that occur most often in Oklahoma or Indiana.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, Graphic Design, or a closely related field. Must be able to write in a style suitable for publication, including print, online, and social media. Must be proficient in the application of Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator. Applicants must have knowledge of, or be willing to learn, the Myaamia language for promotional considerations; have an understanding of Myaamia culture and education, and be willing to participate in ongoing revitalization activities within the Miami Tribe community and on Miami University campus when appropriate.

Desired Qualifications:

Consideration may be given to candidates with 1-2 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to work independently, demonstrate initiative, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively with stakeholders inside and outside of the University. Must be team-oriented, positive attitude, strong work ethic, open-minded and flexible, self-motivated, strong oral and written communication skills, willingness to expand self-learning, promptly responsive.
