Job Title: Senior Director, Strategic DEI Initiatives


Job Summary:


This position reports to the Vice President for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion. The Senior Director, Strategic DEI Initiatives will work closely with the VP as well as campus partners to identify, prioritize, develop, and implement strategic initiatives to promote and sustain the university’s commitment to inclusive excellence and an equitable, inclusive and diverse campus culture. The Senior Director will contribute to the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion’s (OIDI) mission and efforts by serving as a lead advisor on all areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion; participating in short- and long-term university-wide strategic planning and contributing to the development of strategic plans utilizing research and national and institutional data and resources; identifying and contributing to strategic initiatives and policies to move from awareness of DEI to embeddedness of and accountability for DEI across areas of the university; coordinating and managing priorities for specific strategic initiatives, as assigned by the Vice President for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion; intentionally connecting existing programming and efforts to national best practices to support university-wide DEI priorities; developing assessment and accountability measures for existing and new initiatives surrounding climate and inclusive excellence; and identifying, developing, and supporting resources for a variety of stakeholders, including faculty staff, graduate students, undergraduate students, and alumni in response to identified needs. Strategic thinking, benchmarking, innovation, creativity, and a collaborative working style are central to the efforts of the Senior Director as a key liaison within the OIDI for faculty, staff, and students and broader community, and to support and communicate DEI priorities across the university.


Duties/Physical Demands:

- Support and lead in the development of strategic initiatives and programs that educate and promote awareness, understanding, and appreciation of diversity, equity and inclusion on campus.
- Support university committees and groups aimed at building a more inclusive environment.
- Support and coordinate with unit diversity officers to ensure their input and participation in the development of strategic DEI goals, policies, and initiatives.
- Conduct research and benchmarking to identify and support existing and new, innovative initiatives in alignment with best practices across the university and nationally.
- Measure and assess the success of institution-wide progress towards creating a diverse, inclusive, and equitable work and learning environment.
- Provide programming, advocacy, and support, as appropriate to the functioning of the OIDI.
- Strategic plan development, including working closely with VP and across campus to develop short and long-term goals for a campus-wide DEI Strategic Plan.
- Support DEI Taskforce Recommendation Implementation.
- Serve on campus-wide committees representing OIDI.
- Gather, investigate, research, and analyze local and national information affecting programs, initiatives in support of OIDI and university-wide initiatives.
- Support and coordinate with affinity groups to ensure their input and participation in the development of strategic DEI goals and initiatives.


Minimum Qualifications:

- A Master’s degree by first date of employment in sociology, social work, gender and women’s studies, ethnic studies, higher education, anthropology, psychology or other related field.
- Minimum of (5) five years DEI leadership experience in higher education.
- Demonstrated leadership and experience in advancing equity, diversity and inclusion within a complex organization in higher ed.
- Experience conducting independent research, compiling and synthesizing institutional and national data to create benchmarks, and measure progress on priorities
- Experience gathering, analyzing, and interpreting data and statistical reports related to DEI, through both quantitative and qualitative research.


Desired Qualifications:

- Ph.D. in relevant field
- Relevant project management experience in support of senior administration.
- Experience with international faculty, staff, and students.
- Experience with writing grants centering DEI.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Excellent interpersonal skills and cultural competencies.
- Excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills working across a wide range of audiences.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with individuals from diverse constituencies (senior administrators, faculty, staff, graduate students, undergraduate students, alumni) and groups across campus and in the community.
