As part of this team, Student Success Navigators work with students who are exploring majors, changing majors, and to whom the University offers additional support. The Assistant Dean oversees OES operations ensuring that the team exercises the flexibility and creative problem-solving needed to meet diverse students’ needs. This includes hiring and training Navigators and other staff, staying abreast of best practices and technological resources, providing strategic direction and building essential campus partnerships. The Assistant Dean is also a leader in the University’s shift to professional academic advising, by developing strategic approaches to academic advisor professional development and providing institution-level training and support for advisors in partnership with the academic divisions. This is a new role that requires a leader with demonstrated ability to collaborate widely, with an unwavering commitment to student success, who understands and stays updated on student success research and assessment and who is interested in cultural change and innovation in a vibrant academic community. SSNs' work with Miami students is fundamentally student-driven, affirming each individual’s capacity for self-direction, personal development and growth. SSNs explore students’ motivation through self-reflection and assist in building appropriate help-seeking and self-advocacy behaviors, empowering students to make informed decisions about their academic path. Assisting new students with the transition to college, including time management, building community, and establishing next steps is the core of the SSNs’ work with students. Once students have decided on a major, SSNs provide support as they transition to their academic division’s Academic Advising program.
