Lifeguard Certification
This course will certify participants in Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid
The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Program is to train lifeguards to act with speed and confidence in emergency situations both in and out of the water. Topics include water rescue skills, surveillance, and recognition, first aid, breathing and cardiac emergencies, CPR, AED and more.
Prior to registering for this class, participants must pass the prerequisites at Miami University*
This is a blended learning class. You must complete the 6-hour online portion of the course before the first day of the class. A week before the class you will receive an email with the online content. If you don't receive a link within 48 hours of the class, contact Gabrielle Springer at spring@miamioh.edu.
On the first day of class, participants will receive a pocket mask and a hip pack.
Length of Class:
Roughly 22 hours over 3 days.
Absence from any class will result in a failure of the course and forfeiture of the registration fee. Instructors are not permitted to make up missed material with participants.
*Prerequisites:
- Students must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class.
- Students must pass a pre-course swimming skills test prior to taking lifeguarding courses.
- Swim 150/50 yards continuously using front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Face must be in the water and demonstrate rotary breathing. At the end of the 150 yards, tread for 2 minutes using legs only, then finish the last 50 yards.
- Swim 20 yards, retrieve a brick from the bottom of the 10 foot pool and swim back to the side holding the brick in both hands with face out of the water. Exit the pool without using the ladder or steps. This must be done within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
- Once the candidates pass the prerequisite they will receive a link to register for the full class as well as take the online blended learning portion of the class that must be completed prior to the first day of the class.

This course will recertify participants in Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid
The purpose of a recertification course is to give participants the opportunity to review the course knowledge and skills within a formal course setting in order to maintain their American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification.
Current certification (or expired by 30 days or less) in Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid is required to participate in the recertification course.

If you have your own hip pack and/or pocket mask, please bring them on the day of class!
