$11.45 - $12.45 / hr

4-6 maximum

Job Summary:

This listing is for a Staff Writer position for the Regionals Pulse, an online news publication with stories written for Regionals students, by Regionals students. The news site is hosted in conjunction with the Tutoring and Learning Center. Though this listing is ONLY for a Staff Writer position, Writing Tutors can both work for the newspaper and work as a tutor for the Tutoring and Learning Center. Essential Duties:

· Attending all staff meetings.
· Contributing to the growth of The Pulse by “claiming” and writing stories as frequently as possible, and offering ideas concerning new stories, profiles, etc.
· Preparing for stories in advance, if needed (creating interview questions, etc.).
· Following all Pulse journalism policies as set forth in the “Policies” section of our news site.
· Reporting facts, quotes, etc. faithfully and accurately.
· Taking at least 1-2 images for every story covered.
· Revising and proofreading all writing carefully before submitting article to editor.
· Conducting and citing research as needed to give context to stories.
· Being present and on time to all events claimed by writers.
· Recording and reporting accurate timesheet information weekly (or as needed).
· Submitting articles for editorial review in a punctual manner (usually no later than 48 hours after any given event).
· Communicating effectively with all other Pulse staff and advisors, including responding promptly to emails and text messages.
· Use of Microsoft Office, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
· Use of online meeting platforms such as Google Meet or Zoom.
· Use of Google Drive, such as Docs, and Sheets.
· Other duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Applicants must be current Miami students
- Maintain good academic standing
- Maintain a 3.3 minimum GPA
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

- Ability to work after 5 PM
- Maintain a 3.5 GPA
- Average typing speed
- Reliable, with excellent attendance habits
- Detail-oriented
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to work in an independent work environment with minimal supervision
- Ability to work well under stress and time pressure

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Please plan to provide a resume listing your prior writing experience, as well as 1 faculty reference. This should be from a recent professor or other instructor (within the last twelve months) who could speak to the quality of your writing work in detail. You will also be asked to provide one of your best pieces of writing as part of your application. The reference/portfolio piece should both be attached to your application and also emailed directly to Kyle Warren at warrenks@miamioh.edu. Faculty references should be sent to Kyle directly from the faculty member, or otherwise show some proof that the recommendation originated from that faculty member, such as an email signature.
