Job Summary:

Postdoctoral Fellow under a 1-year appointment to perform original research supported by an NSF-funded project entitled “Online Training Using Tutorial-Based Active E-Learning to Broaden Participation and Enhance Scientific Computing Skills within a Disciplinary Context.” This project capitalizes on a wealth of existing educational data collected from the Seismology Skill Building Workshop and seeks to further develop the program for future implementations. Starting date as soon as possible, preferably by July 1, 2022, but can be negotiated.

The successful candidate will be hosted within the Geology and Environmental Earth Science Department at Miami University but will also work closely with educational staff at the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology and the Miami University Discipline-Based Education Research Associates. Miami University is a top 50 national public university, and within the top 10 for commitment to undergraduate education.

Duties/Physical Demands:

The Postdoctoral Fellow will participate in some of the following activities: coding and categorization of existing assignment components to evaluate learning trajectories; performing correlation analyses and developing logistic regression models to predict student initiation, performance, and retention as a driver to improve workshop efficacy; investigate potential variations related to participant backgrounds; implement changes to instruction to vary the level of scaffolding; develop and validate instruments for assessing skill and content knowledge. While the scope of the project is described, the Postdoctoral Fellow will also have opportunities to make creative contributions to the approaches used to achieve the aims of the project.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in geoscience, education, or a closely related field by date of appointment with experience in educational research.

Consideration may be given to candidates who are interested in student motivation and cognition, curriculum, instruction, and assessment, self-directed, online learning environments as they relate to computational thinking and scientific skill development.
