Job Summary:

Assistant Dean, Undergraduate Education to lead the work of the Office of Exploratory Studies. The Office of Undergraduate Education at Miami University centers its attention on a holistic approach to student success. Ensuring that every student who starts a Miami University education achieves their goals is the focus of our work. The Office of Undergraduate Education houses the Honors College, the Office of Academic Integrity, and the Office of Exploratory Studies (OES). This is a new role for Miami University that will require a leader with demonstrated ability to collaborate widely across campus, with an unwavering commitment to student success, who understands and stays updated on the growing body of research and assessment around student success, and who is interested in cultural change and implementing innovations in a vibrant academic community. The Assistant Dean reports to the Associate Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Education.

The Office of Exploratory Studies (OES) serves to enhance the academic success of Miami students by providing holistic, individualized support for students who are exploring pathways for their academic journey. This support centers on engaging in highly personalized interactions with students, developing a deep understanding of their interests, needs, and resources, and employing exploratory approaches to major and course selection. The OES team works in constant collaboration with campus partners in the academic divisions, Student Life, and Enrollment Management and Student Success to ensure that students access the campus resources available to support their educational success. Providing students with the support they need when they need it is the goal of the OES team.

Duties/Physical Demands:

The Assistant Dean, Undergraduate Education will hire, train and provide ongoing support and professional development for Student Success Navigators; develop a strategic approach to academic advisor professional development and provide institution-level training and support for advisors in partnership with the academic divisions; with the Dean for Undergraduate Education, develop a strategic approach for utilizing predictive analytics and other technologies to provide on-time interventions to students who need them; in collaboration with partners from the academic divisions, develop a strategic approach to academic advising professional development and recognition for the Oxford and Regional campuses; utilizing research and recognized best practices, develop innovative programs for supporting populations of Miami University students identified as in need of additional support for their success; develop strategic retention and persistence goals and implement plans to achieve these goals; take a holistic view of student success, including qualitative measures of success, and develop innovative strategies for ensuring that Miami University students have an exceptional educational experience; utilize assessment and evaluation skills to measure the effectiveness of strategies and initiatives intended to support student success; support the development and implementation of comprehensive major maps across campus; collaborate with other members of the Office of Undergraduate Education team to set and implement a strategic vision for university-wide student success efforts; build and nurture on-going relationships with colleagues and partners across campus.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or closely related field; demonstrated ability to think creatively to provide institution-level strategies for student success; demonstrated experience implementing University-level programs to support student success; strong record of cross-institutional collaboration; ability to understand and synthesize data to guide decision-making; 3 years of experience hiring, training, and supporting the professional development of a diverse professional staff in a higher education setting; evidence of strong verbal and written communication skills; understanding of higher education retention, advising, and student development theories; strong organizational skills and proven experience of making decisions in a fast-paced, data-driven environment.

Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States on a fulltime and indefinite basis.

Desired Qualifications:

Consideration may be given to candidates with a Doctoral degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling or closely related field; experience with managing budgets; experience in both Student Affairs and Academic Affairs in higher education; experience teaching in a higher education setting.
