Job Summary:

 

The Senior Director of Strategic Academic Communications and Marketing is responsible
for strategic communication across Miami University’s academic divisions to their key
audiences, including current students, prospective students, faculty, community/business
leaders, and alumni. This position establishes service levels for academic division
communication; integrates academic division efforts with the university’s communications
strategy; and surfaces important academic successes, opportunities, and research to other
University Communications and Marketing team members for inclusion in university-level
stories and channels (social media, video, marketing, university news).

 

Duties/Physical Demands:

Strategic College Communications - 70%
Works with academic division communications directors, deans, and University
Communications and Marketing leaders to develop a consistent approach to academic
division communication and marketing support, including developing an annual
communication planning process to advance the Miami University Strategic Plan and the
communications goals of each academic division.
Works with the deans and divisional communication directors to ensure consistent and
effective branding, messaging, and communication planning across all efforts.
Facilitates university research communication as a key point of coordination between the
divisional communication directors and the news and media relations team.
Surfaces important academic division-level stories to be more visible to the University
Communication and Marketing team for inclusion in other university-level communication
efforts as applicable.
Supports planning and communications for internal audiences within the academic
divisions.
Reporting and Assessment - 15%
Leads performance management for all academic division communicators, meets regularly
with academic division communicators and at least quarterly with deans to establish
communications goals, identify strategies and tactics, and determine how success will be
measured.
Oversees assessment of college communication effectiveness based on established KPIs.
Establishes consistent qualitative and quantitative reporting efforts for academic division
communicators.
Formally assesses team opportunities and strengths at least twice a year and delivers
recommendations on professional development opportunities to the Vice President and
Chief Communications and Marketing Officer for review and consideration.

Crisis and Issues Management - 10%
Supports crisis communications, including development and execution of crisis
communication strategy for academic divisions in collaboration with communicators across
the university; also assists the Vice President and Chief Communications and Marketing
Officer in active management of issues.
Other duties as assigned - 5%
Supports important University Communications and Marketing strategic efforts including
crisis communication, when needed.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

- BA/BS degree with an emphasis in communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field.
- At least seven (7) years of professional communications, marketing, or related experience.
- At least three (3) years of supervisory experience.
- Significant experience executing integrated communication efforts for a complex, multifaceted organization
- Experience working in highly collaborative environments requiring interpersonal communication competence, initiative, active listening, and emotional intelligence.
- Experience in these areas may be earned concurrently.

 

Desired Qualifications:

MA/MS/MBA degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or related field.
Demonstrated understanding of the higher education environment.
Experience working within a college or division at a university.
Experience with multicultural marketing and communications.
Demonstrated understanding of the value of storytelling.
Experience in a highly collaborative environment working with colleagues and peers to
achieve revenue, enrollment, fundraising, or similar goals.
Experience within an organization evolving into a centralized communications model.

- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to employ strategic thinking from big picture goals to specific tactical plans.
- Commitment to teamwork, collaboration, and consensus building, with a demonstrated ability to partner and lead through influence, across organizational lines.
