Job Summary:

Orientation and Transition Programs provides new Miami students with opportunities to learn about the campus community and to begin building connections to better prepare them for their experiences as undergraduate students. Student Orientation Undergraduate Leaders (SOULs) are the direct liaisons between Orientation and Transition Programs and new students and families. During summer orientation, SOULs act as small group facilitators, vignette performers, and representatives of Miami University. SOULs are advised and mentored by two Orientation Student Coordinators, report to the Assistant Director of Orientation and Transition Programs, and work closely with both the Coordinator and Director of Orientation and Transition Programs.

Essential Duties:

•Demonstrate leadership ability as a role model for new students
•Participate Welcome Weekend 2021, and January orientation/Winter Welcome 2021.
•Contribute actively and authentically to the SOUL team
•Maintain professional relationships with first-year students
•Be open to new ideas and experiences
•Display positive, professional, courteous and friendly behavior
•Have FUN!
Responsibilities During Summer Orientation
•Share your University experiences with new students and family members
•Deliver student life content during orientation
•Participate in question and answer panels
•Assist students and families with navigating campus
•Facilitate small group discussions with first-year students
•Work in the office and complete administrative tasks
•Respond professionally to telephone and e-mail communication
•Live in the residence halls: uphold the policies of these communities, perform rounds, respond to crises, and eat in the dining halls during sessions
•Other duties as assigned
•$8.800/hr. + a meal plan that covers any meals during work times
•Residence hall room and meal plan for work dates

Minimum Qualifications:

Student Orientation Undergraduate Leaders must have a minimum GPA of 2.7, be enrolled as an undergraduate at Miami during the fall of 2021, and demonstrate strong leadership and integrity. Successful SOUL applicants commonly have strong communication and organization skills, take initiative, contribute positively in a team environment, have empathy, are flexible, willing to address conflict and seek solutions to individual and team challenges, and show a commitment to diversity by accepting and learning from others while creating an atmosphere of positive engagement.
SOUL applicants must be in good standing with the Office of Ethics and Student Conflict Resolution and SOULs must maintain good judicial standing throughout their employment* with the Office of Orientation and Transition Programs. SOULs are also required to abide by the Office of Orientation and Transition Program’s Student Leader Alcohol Policy (see next page for details) and maintain at least a 2.7 GPA throughout their time as a SOUL. * A disciplinary record does not automatically exclude candidates from eligibility for this position. It may, however, warrant a discussion about the appropriateness of your candidacy and could be a factor in employment decisions.
