Duties and Responsibilities A successful applicant will typically have experience as a Miami University SOUL, a Miami University RA, or as a Summer Scholars participant; have completed at least two years of study at Miami University by May 15; and have junior standing by the start of the program. Graduate student status will be considered in lieu of experience. HRAs for the on-campus, residential experience MUST live in the program’s residence hall and be on call 24/7 for the duration of the program (virtual or residential). Room and board is provided. Managerial experience and substantial Residence Life experience and/or Summer Scholars program counseling experience is highly preferred. The HRA is on duty from June 27, 2021-July 24, 2021, with leadership responsibilities in mandatory staff training sessions June 22, 2021-June 26, 2021. The HRAs are expected to begin program planning responsibilities during the spring semester, and several virtual meetings with the Student Staff Manager may be requested prior to the start of the program.
Team Leadership • Serve as team lead for the counselors and as direct liaison with the Student Staff Manager in the Office of Admission (virtually and/or on-campus) • Assist with planning and organization of program activities and special events, both on and off- campus and/or virtually • Assist in facilitating daily counseling staff meetings, one-on-one meetings with counselors, and staff team-building/training as needed (on-campus and/or virtually) • Fill in for student counselors in times of absence
Effective Community Engagement • Develop an open and honest professional relationship with counselors and participants • Maintain a safe atmosphere in the residence hall as well as anywhere the scholars group travels (or in online platform if program is offered virtually) • Understand, exemplify, and enforce the policies of the University Code of Conduct, Minors on Campus Policy, and the Summer Scholars Program • Plan and execute activities (to be offered either in-person or virtually) that will assist participants in interacting with one another, developing new skills or knowledge, and familiarizing participants with Miami University • Assist in possible conflict resolution among program participants • Respond accordingly to crises which may arise among participants • Be accessible and interact with student participants
Intercultural Understanding • Act as a positive role model for the student staff counselors and the program participants • Promote a climate that is inclusive and respectful of all participants, students, and Miami faculty and staff • Engage in group activities/discussions centered around cultural competence with program participants and fellow staff
Academic Success • Inform program participants of deadlines and pertinent information concerning academic matters and upcoming program activities through flyers, bulletin boards, meetings, etc. • Participate in Summer Scholars programming and field trips and/or virtual activities
Hall Management (Primarily applies to on-campus program) • Assist with the opening and closing of the hall each session of the program • Manage hall duty schedule and cover rounds as needed • Manage bell desk schedule and cover duties as needed • Remain on-call 24/7 for the duration of the program • Report problems with facilities or damage (or inappropriate behavior in the virtual platform) • Cooperate with maintenance staff in achieving a healthy physical environment within the community • Assist the Office of Admission in various administrative tasks such as evaluations, surveys and the distribution of material to participants (which may take place on-campus or virtually) • Understand and utilize emergency procedures as appropriate
Training • Participate in all training sessions: June 22, 2021 – June 26, 2021 • Attend regular team meetings and one-on-one meetings with professional staff member
