Job Title: Assistant Director of Outreach
Job Summary:

The College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) Assistant Director of Outreach will establish CEC's outreach programs to school students in the tri-state area. The role will build relationships with local schools and K-12 focused non-profits, organize summer and winter programming, coordinate day programs during Fall and Spring semester and sustain relationships with Miami University constituencies/stakeholders. The Assistant Director of Outreach will support and enhance experiential learning programs for students with diverse backgrounds and create a potential pipeline into the Admissions process. The vision of Miami University’s College of Engineering and Computing Outreach is to excite children and youth in engineering and computer science through fun and exciting hands-on activities and programs that will motivate them to pursue STEM careers.

Duties/Physical Demands:
  • Develop and steward CEC relations with local area schools and K-12 focused non-profits
  • Communicate with school boards, school administrators, and teachers to find the best way to promote programs and to help better understand the needs of the audience
  • Plan and organize Summer and Winter Term CEC focused camps for middle school and high school students
  • Coordinate day experiences during Fall and Winter term for CEC student organization's outreach activities (Girls Who Code, Kode2Learn, Girl Scout Day, Engineering Day, and Hackathons)
  • Provide on-campus hosting and coordination for outreach programming
  • Coordinate with Housing and Dining on use of facilities and fees for use by participants
  • Budgeting and proper accounting for allocated funds for programming
  • Develop agenda, activities, and programming for school audiences. Programming must be appropriate for the audience
  • Create marketing materials to support CEC outreach programs
  • Coordinate closely with the CEC academic departments, graduate programs, centers, institutes, and Admissions on outreach programming
  • Solicit and manage registration for programs
  • Training and supervision of staff, students and/or volunteers in a manner appropriate for the event
  • Ensuring the safety of all program participants
  • Documenting the event (text and photos) and reporting on outcomes for future improvement
  • Develop and use tools to assess success of program activities. Assessment may be used to share success with other programs through papers and conference.
  • Documenting engineering outreach experiences through social media and ongoing evaluation and reports
  • Be cognizant of research and/or new technologies that could impact programs
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Science, a STEM field, or Education and three years of experience engaging students in educational experiences; Established record of accomplishment of identifying, developing, and managing outreach programs with diverse communities; Outstanding interpersonal communication skills; Strong organizational skills and is highly self-motivated; Familiarity with desktop publishing software; Willingness to work outside regular hours when programs include nights or weekends; Thinks critically and solves problems creatively and efficiently; Can effectively communicate technical concepts to a variety of stakeholders.

This position is available to persons who are currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time and indefinite basis. (Persons authorized to work on such a basis include US citizens, lawful permanent residents (“green card” holders), asylees, refugees, and temporary residents under IRCA.)

Desired Qualifications:

Consideration may be given to candidates with a Master’s Degree in Engineering, STEM field or Education and five years of experience engaging students in educational experiences; Aptitude for engineering and computer science; Serve as a positive role model for young people in urban and rural communities; Can create and maintain an inclusive and safe space for all youth; Strong work ethic and a demonstrated ability to be professional at all events; Confident using or willing to learn Maker Tools, basic programming languages and updating social media channels.
