Food Service Assistant (Starbucks Barista)

Salary/Grade:

$16.00/E2 (Temporary wage increase)

Job Summary:

Performs a variety of tasks related to assisting in the preparation and serving of coffee shop food & beverages for University students and guests

Duties/Physical Demands:

• Brews beverages. Provides prompt quality products consistently for all customers by adhering to all recipe and presentation standards. Reads and interprets recipes, measures and mixes ingredients.
• Operates cash register; receives payment and makes change; may count register drawer and reconcile with shift balance.
• Prepares food for cooking/service which may include tallying, pulling, rotating, wrapping food, or preparing sandwiches, pastries, and other items. May include the use of ovens and other kitchen equipment; records temperature, monitors and records amounts prepared/consumed/ left over.
• Responds to client requests for service, special diets, as well as other information in a friendly and helpful manner. Delivers legendary customer service by acting with a “customer comes first” attitude and connecting with each customer. Uses cues to anticipate customer needs.
• Assists in providing guidance to other employees in the performance of their duties; coordinates efficient work flow and instructs in the proper use of equipment and utensils; serves as informational resource to student employees and other staff.
• Assists manager with recipes, menus, orders, inventory and possibly forecasting; monitors product and supplies to maintain daily operations in addition to production needs. Performs inventory calculations and data entry to maintain a perpetual inventory/stock. May creates prep lists and production schedules.
• Maintains clear and consistent communication regarding production needs, service, store, and operations with co-workers and supervisors. Anticipates store needs by constantly evaluating the venue. Stocks serving line and/or serves food; monitors condition of items in both un-refrigerated and refrigerated settings; maintains all food items at proper temperatures as instructed. Prepares kitchen and dining area which may include stocking/setting up: display cases, condiment bars, beverage stations, dessert stations; performs kitchen prep including turning on equipment and assembling correct utensils; monitors oven and refrigerator temperatures.
• Follows Miami University and Starbucks operational policies to keep store in compliance by both Miami and Starbuck standards. Follows health, safety, and sanitation guidelines. Maintains clean and sanitary work area, especially in kitchen and dining areas which may include sweeping, scrubbing, cleaning tables, countertops, and machines or washing dishes and utensils. Ensures safety of food and food contact surfaces while maintaining sanitation standards. Observes strict safety rules.
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a high school diploma or GED. No experience required.
Will be expected to complete and pass the Starbucks Barista Training Program/Certification successfully within the first six months of being hired or must present a valid Starbucks certification number upon hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of basic food preparation techniques
• Knowledge of sanitation techniques
• Ability to understand and follow directions

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

Physical effort usually requires considerable walking, standing, bending, twisting, pushing and pulling, with some lifting of materials weighing 25 to 50 pounds. Somewhat disagreeable working conditions due to exposure to high temperatures. Some element of personal risk due to very hot surfaces. A few occasions of outdoor event service.
