Job Summary:

As Miami’s first Chief Data Officer, you will design and lead the implementation of our campus wide data strategy. Miami is ready to take a big step forward into a shared, highly accessible and usable, well governed data environment unifying multiple successful data-driven business intelligence and data analysis efforts across campus. This is an opportunity to build the foundations for Miami’s data-driven future.

As our CDO, you will be responsible for building bridges with diverse organizations on our Oxford campus, as well as our regional campuses in Hamilton and Middletown, and our international facility in Luxembourg. Success will result in making well defined, properly governed, mission critical data accessible through easy to use dashboards, reports, and self-driven query tools that support institutional decision making and student success.

The Chief Data Officer reports to the Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer, and is part of the IT Services leadership team. As the CDO, you will build and maintain strategic relationships with areas including the President's Executive Cabinet, deans and other academic leaders, and a broad slate of data owners and consumers across campus.


Duties/Physical Demands:


Miami's Chief Data Officer is responsible for building and supporting our campus wide data strategy and data governance. In this role, the CDO will:

● Support the development, assessment, refinement, and implementation of university strategies through effective use of data analytics.
● Serve as a facilitator to traverse divisional silos, create synergies between functions, and align shared efforts to enable measurable business outcomes. Articulate and communicate analytical priorities to appropriate constituencies within the university.
● Enhance data-driven decision-making through expansion of self-service data queries with clearly defined data elements, making data accessible to departmental and divisional users across our campuses.
● Engage in an ongoing dialogue with leaders to foster conversations to gain an understanding of the data and analytics challenges and opportunities from each unit. Partner with campus to develop specific analytical and data science capabilities to achieve institutional goals and operational improvements as well as enable new forms of decision making and positive interventions aimed at the success of our students.
● Continuously assess and recommend enhancement to the university’s data architecture, data governance practices, data structures, and relevant technical tools and applications.
● Work closely with the Chief Information Security Officer to establish consistent criteria for appropriate access and security.


Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

● Bachelor's degree and 5-7 years of experience with cross-functional or cross-divisional leadership of complex efforts such as shared governance, technology implementations, divisional leadership, or major programs, or an equivalent combination of education and/or related experience.
● Broad experience and understanding of institutional and organizational data governance and management methods, concepts, and techniques.
● Demonstrated ability to define strategic initiatives and oversee the development of long-term plans and proposals.
● The ability to successfully navigate a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal and inter organizational situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
● Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate strategic plans and direct initiatives.

● Direct experience as a chief data officer or related role
● Proven and successful experience with hands-on leadership roles directly managing data and analytics teams, and driving change within large, complex organizations
● Certification or training in data management or chief data officer roles
