This position reports directly to the Department head and is responsible for managing the operations of the Special Collections and Archives, including the Reading Room, and supervising undergraduate and graduate student workers within the Havighurst Special Collections and Archives.

Student Specialist – Technical Services

This Student Specialist position is to assist with research within the Technical Services department of the Libraries. They will work with the Acquisitions and Access Librarian on a Academic Library Association of Ohio(ALAO) grant funded research project. The research is centered on the educational curriculum of librarians and electronic resources. This position will help gather course data from various ALA accredited programs and gather job descriptions from identified sources. The Acquisitions and Access Librarian and this position will work together using qualitative methods to analyze the data gathered. Information will be provided on how to gather data and analysis methods used. This position is collaborative, so input regarding workflow, data harvesting, and analysis is encouraged. The typical work schedule for this role will fall between 8:30am - 5:00pm, Monday-Friday, but is flexible.

Student Associate - Special Projects at the Libraries

Miami University Libraries, in cooperation with OhioLINK, Ohio’s academic library consortium, seeks to identify candidates interested in working in the campus library and experiencing librarianship as a possible career path. This position requires a full academic year commitment (fall and spring semester) and the ability to work 10-15 hours per week. The position includes an orientation, departmental rotations, and working with a mentor. Student participants are also expected to participate in professional development sessions to be coordinated throughout the academic year. As a paid, resume-building position offering hands-on experience, the student participants receive a broad introduction to the information studies profession—its purpose, its reach, and its expertise. Students are paired with a mentor to explore librarianship, gain valuable knowledge in the field, and develop marketable skills that are extendable to a variety of career disciplines. This program provides experiential learning, valuable training, and professional support within a structured work environment. Student participants around the state will be given the opportunity to network and collaborate. A final reflective project will be required, but will be discussed and agreed upon with the student’s mentor. Please note no previous experience is required and it is not necessary to be considering information studies or librarianship as a career to apply for this position. Please note that new hires will automatically be enrolled in the Libraries' Student Leadership Academy during their first full year of employment. It focuses on personal leadership and allows you to reflect on your skills, vision, values, and goals. Self-leadership and self-reflection are critical skills to develop to effectively lead and work with others. This position will start August 2023.

Student Assistant – Steward & Sustain DPMA

Digitization and Postcard Metadata Assistant (DPMA) will assist the Digital Collections Librarian and the Digitization Services Specialist at the Walter Havighurst Special Collections and University Archives (located on the third floor of King Library) with a variety of digital initiatives. The DPMA will assist the Digital Collections Librarian with a number of digital initiatives by digitizing archival materials and creating metadata for these materials along with supporting the creation of oral histories and other digital collections. The department has a total of 38 digital collections. The student in this position will be completing tasks that will result in an increase in the number of digital collections and digitized materials in each collection. They will also assist the Digitization Services Specialist with metadata research, digitization, and digital exhibits of the Bowden Postcard Collection. This collection consists of over 500,000 postcards collected throughout the 20th Century and represents a vast range of historical and geographical images and subjects.
