Exploratory Students

Students who have not decided on a major are assigned to Exploratory Studies. Once students decide upon a major with support from their Student Success Navigator, they are assigned a new advisor from their major department or program.

Drop-in Advising

The Student Success Center offers drop-in advising hours to all Exploratory Studies students. Meetings will last approximately 10 minutes. If further discussion is needed, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled.

Hours

Mondays and Tuesdays: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Wednesdays and Thursdays: 2 – 4 p.m.

Instructions

  1. Log into Navigate.
  2. Select “Get Assistance,” located in the upper right-hand corner.
  3. Under Other Options, select “View Drop-In Times.”
  4. Under Appointment type, select “Oxford - Academic Advising.”
  5. Under Service, you should see “Exploratory Studies Drop-in,” and under that an option for “Virtual Drop-In.” Please only select this option.
  6. Click the “Find Available Time” button.
  7. On the next page, ignore the filters on the left, and select the “Exploratory Studies” Academic Advising link to the right.
  8. Click the “Check-in with first available” button.
  9. The next screen will indicate you have successfully checked in, which means you have been added to the queue of students waiting for the next available advisor.
  10. Have your Miami email account open because an academic advisor will email you a Zoom meeting link.
  11. Click on the link you receive to join the Zoom waiting room. The advisor will admit you from there.

What is a Student Success Navigator?

Student Success Navigators provide individualized, holistic support for undergraduate students who are in the exploratory stage of their college experience. They can help you with:

  • Major exploration
  • Course selection
  • Financial, emotional, and social health
  • Academic performance
  • Progressing toward graduation

Student Exploration Process

Orientation

  • During orientation, you’ll learn about exploratory studies, identify your interest area, and work with a Student Success Navigator to select first-semester courses.
  • You’re encouraged to attend a welcome event to learn more about the program and begin building community. 

Fall Semester

  • You’ll receive proactive communication from your Student Success Navigator about important information throughout the semester.
  • You’ll schedule an initial meeting with your Student Success Navigator to begin the exploratory process.
  • You’ll meet with your Student Success Navigator to complete your spring registration appointment. 
  • You’ll meet with a Career Advisor in the Center for Career Exploration and Success to begin learning about career pathways available to different majors.

Spring Semester

  • You’ll meet with your assigned Student Success Navigator to continue the exploration process. 
  • You can enroll in EDL 100: College and Career Development 
  • You’ll participate in at least one OES or CCES program. 

Fall Semester (Year Two) 

  • You’ll meet with your Student Success Navigator twice to solidify your exploration and transition plan.
  • You’ll confidently select a major and transition to your major advisor.

Student Learning Outcomes 

Exploratory Studies students will: 

  • Be able to identify their interests, values, skills, and personality traits to select a major and career pathway.
  • Have an awareness of the different campus resources and an understanding of how those resources may be utilized to support their success in their academic career effectively.
  • Develop meaningful relationships with their Student Success Navigator, faculty, staff, and peers. 
  • Confidently select a major within three semesters.
