Focus. Relax. Repeat. Miami’s Growing Network of Wellness Spaces

Have you ever needed a quiet place to relax or study? Or just need to get away from the hustle and bustle of campus for a few minutes? Miami University has several wellness and sensory rooms designed to help students, faculty, and staff to unwind, reflect, and focus. These spaces are open to all, but they are particularly beneficial for neurodiverse students and employees. From sensory study rooms to wellness studios with weekly events, these areas support well-being in unique ways across campus.

Miami has been building its catalog of wellness spaces over the past several years. The latest additions are two sensory study rooms in King Library. These rooms are located in a quiet area and can be reserved for up to four people.

Caitlin Spyra, a representative of the Associated Student Government, emphasizes the importance of these spaces in supporting student success.

”I can verify from personal experience, the soundproofed rooms at King Library greatly reduce outside noise and allow for heightened concentration,” said Spyra. ”We hope to work with library staff to support their current efforts, such as rentable headphones, and potential future projects - such as study pods - to ensure more students have access to sound-reduced environments through multiple avenues."

Another space on campus makes it easier for students to access telehealth services in a private space. The TriHealth Wellness Room, located in Student Health Services, offers a private room for telehealth appointments in a relaxing environment. This space features a laptop, aromatherapy, sensory therapy, magnetic putty, and a zen garden. Open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., students can register to use the space at the front desk of Student Health Services.

Other wellness spaces across campus give students a chance to recharge. The Wellness Studio in the Clinical Health Science and Wellness Building hosts events like dog therapy, yoga, and stress-relief activities.

The Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion (CSDI) Wellness Room in the Armstrong Student Center offers mood lighting, air diffusers, yoga mats, and even a guided meditation app on a new TV. The room is also equipped with Moon Pod bean bags, fidget toys, and an ethereal background music machine. Access to the space is on a first-come, first-served basis, with an “Available/In-Use” sign on the door for convenience. This space is open throughout the week, allowing students to step away from their studies and focus on their well-being.

From peaceful study spots to relaxation areas, Miami has made it easier than ever for students to find a place to focus and de-stress. For a complete list of spaces, including photos and hours of operation, visit MiamiOH.edu/WellnessRooms to find the right space for you.
