Job Title: Postdoctoral Fellow
Job Summary:

The Yezierski Research Group is one of two CER groups in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at Miami comprising a productive, collaborative, and supportive CER division. This project involves planning and facilitating a teacher professional development institute, investigations of teacher learning, and a national study of teacher practices and student learning outcomes. The project team will establish a sustained community of practice including teachers skilled in the VisChem Approach and a group of new teaching and research scholars with expertise in building conceptual understanding through the effective use of molecular-level visualization. Three chemistry teacher cohorts (N = 64) will participate in annual intensive institutes to learn the research foundation and pedagogical moves for the VisChem Approach. The approach uses Dr. Roy Tasker’s carefully produced dynamic visualizations with teaching strategies informed by a cognitive learning model. Key to VisChem is communication of internal visualizations using storyboards (drawings with explanation) of chemical and physical changes. The project will use an iterative design research method to examine teacher learning in the institute and how teachers implement the VisChem Approach in classrooms. Data collected will include teachers' storyboards, classroom videos, and pre/post student assessments. The postdoctoral researcher will work with Yezierski, graduate students, and undergraduate students in the group along with Tasker and an esteemed advisory board. The position is full-time for one year (beginning in winter, spring, or summer 2020) with renewal for up to two additional years, dependent upon satisfactory annual review and funding.

Duties/Physical Demands:

Assist in data collection and analysis; prepare presentations and papers to be presented at national conferences; mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the Research Group; work independently or as part of a team to design, implement, and disseminate research aligned with the program’s research agenda; serve as first author on reports and publications; implement the professional development;

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in chemistry education research (or a related field) by date of appointment; evidence of presentation and publication skills; excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills for a variety of audiences.

Desired Qualifications:

Candidates with interests in teacher learning, teacher professional development, design research, and/or high school chemistry.
